Daughters of the Nile
Happy 100th Birthday in 2013

Supreme
Queen Sue Layman
The Daughters of the Nile was founded in
1913 for the purpose of building character among women and for social
entertainment and advancement. In 1922, because of the founders’ strength
of purpose and a desire for more meaningful goals, they requested and
received permission to have the Shriners Hospitals for Children® designated
as their sole philanthropy. Support is given to these hospitals by monetary
donations, by the provision of items requested by the hospitals, and by
numerous volunteer hours. In 2007, the Order received IRS approval to be a
501(c)(3) public charity. The Daughters of the Nile Foundation thus formed
oversees two funds: the Convalescent Endowment Fund and the Convalescent
Relief Account. These funds, along with the generous donations of our
members, generate sufficient income to provide yearly cash contributions to
the Shriners Hospitals for Children® in the amount of approximately $1.5
million.
As Daughters of the Nile, we enjoy great
fellowship, friendship, and fun as we share our dedication to our fraternal
organization and its philanthropic endeavors. Look through our website and
our linked Foundation website to learn more about us and our philanthropy.
It is both an honor and a privilege for me
to serve as Supreme Queen and CEO of the Daughters of the Nile. I hope that
all of the Daughters of the Nile can work together this year to support and
strengthen both our philanthropy and our fraternal organization. These
distinct entities remain forever united by our heartfelt dedication to the
Shriners Hospitals for Children® and each other.
